Possibly THE BEST BOOK I have ever read! Loved it! tell the story of a beautiful friendship of two women which starts when they are in middle school and carries into adulthood. The emotions that welled up inside of me while reading this book are indescribable, but I know I felt all of them! Such a great read. Her sequel, Fly Away, is very good as well.
This is pretty different from most things I've read. I find myself angry at the characters, sympathizing, then not caring about them at all. Woodrell's approach to the "redneck scum" story seems fresh and different, but I can't say I'm really enjoying the story as I don't see any positive outcome for anyone. A major plot twist halfway through left me rather cross, and also frustrated at the characters' hopeless situation and the prejudice against them -- hmm, I guess in that case that I do care about them. It's a frustrating read and at the same time I kind of feel that I could put it down and not think twice about never finishing the story. We'll see whether that changes by the end.
