Broadway şovunu veya filmi sevdiyseniz, kitabı seveceksiniz ... daha fazla ayrıntı ve oldukça ürkütücü oluyor. Bir oyunda yapamadıkları bir sürü şey. Harika bir klasik.

For a book that focuses so much on the repression around a middle-class suburban couple, I found it rather offputting that the characters were so prone to saying exactly what they felt at any given point. Given that they always told each other how much they hated each other, how fed up they were, etc, I was surprised they'd stayed together for so long without killing each other. The book was a lot easier to read once I accepted it as a kind of modernist parable rather than a straight-up piece of plausible fiction (because almost nothing in this book is believable, but I have to believe the author intended it that way) - there are some moments of it that completely blindside you (if I were ever to make an internet macro of this book, it would probably involve the phrase "UNEXPECTED LESBIANS"), but it becomes quite compelling after a while, when you realise how trapped the main characters are, and how their attempts to escape just seal them in even more strongly. I did feel slightly cheated by the end, however; it's rather abrupt, and given the tone of the book as a whole, it didn't provide much resolution, or even much justification as to why this was a good place to end the story. Still, it was a compelling, if occasionally appalling (in terms of character behaviour, rather than actual quality of novel), read.

I really need to read more Vonnegut. This book made me laugh out loud. It's brilliant, really.

I can only comment on this book through the lens of havign taught it to kids. Those who want a fast storyline are not going to find it here. Those who are interested in the different ways that cultures do things like marriage, widowhood and death will find a well written story with compelling characters and ultimately an excellent plot. Koly is a child bride who only was married off for the money of her bride price, as it turns out. And her future husband is on his deathbed. With so many things constantly changing in her life, it's amazing that Koly can manage to maintain her positive attitude about life.
